Introduction

Introduction

The Adelaide Design Manual is a toolkit that builds on the City of Adelaide’s strengths and draws from local, national and international experience in urban design and sustainability principles, providing direction for the design of public spaces.

The principles that this Introduction sets out provide the foundation for the design of all projects in the city’s public realm. It has been designed to be used by government staff, design professionals, members of the community, and others with an interest in public life, to assist in creating welcoming, authentic and high-quality city spaces.

This Introduction provides an overview of the Adelaide Design Manual and why we need this guidance for the city. It explains how to use the Adelaide Design Manual and outlines when it should be applied to city projects.
